Sarah Witt

Profile

Among other things, Sarah is an interdisciplinary artist with a severe interest in physically engaging her audience as performers of her interactive sculptures and installations. The social and experiential format of her work provides an accessible, playful platform for the discussion of themes she considers rather grave: global consumerism, the resulting waste and the accompanying sense of cultural homogenization. In the attempt to initiate a dialogue concerning these and similar trends, Sarah places her work in the public sphere, activating overlooked spaces and interfacing with a spectrum of unsuspecting communities. This, she believes, is an effective and educational model for spurring awareness and conducting change within previously stated destructive practices.

Sarah recently coordinated a national tour of “Polymorphic Plastic Parade,” a mobile art installation of Native American-style tipis made from salvaged waste plastic and locally harvested bamboo. (She used to live in South Carolina, where the invasive species is quite common.) Hosted by art organizations and community centers, the project visited 8 urban locations over the course of a month, and included workshops with disadvantaged youth and public presentations about issues in sustainability and art activism.

Sarah recently completed a year-long residency at HUB-BUB in Spartanburg, South Carolina and is a member of Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in Greensboro, North Carolina. Far prior to her engagements in the Carolinas, she earned a BFA from Syracuse University in film.
