The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is seeking an individual with an emerging international reputation to join the faculty of its Visual Arts Program. We seek a colleague with significant experience, knowledge and accomplishments in the fields of technoaesthetic and/or technocultural art practice, especially in the areas of New Media and/or Media Performance, an artist who has strong skills and experience in teaching at the college, university or art school academic level. This appointment will be a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent
· Emerging international recognition as a practicing artist
· Experience teaching at the college, university or art school level
· Skills, knowledge and accomplishments in technocultural, technoaesthetic and performative art practice and a strong interest in transdisciplinary collaboration
· The candidate must be highly knowledgeable in contemporary art practice, art history, art and media theory
MIT’s Visual Arts Program develops critical analytical and visionary strategies in artistic practice within the context of the advanced scientific and engineering community of MIT. Students and faculty alike are drawn to the program because of the transdisciplinary opportunities found in this unique environment. The faculty is composed of renowned artists with active, international careers in artistic production and a strong interest in cross-discipline debate and modes of production. MIT students are diverse, intellectually gifted and highly motivated. Undergraduates come from a variety of scientific and technical fields from across the Institute. Graduate enrollment includes not only the program’s own master’s students, but also students from Architecture, the Media Lab, and other academic units.
We seek a colleague whose artistic practice bridges art, science, and technology, and intersects with emerging directions and methodologies in sciences (including social and human sciences), new technologies (including communication technologies), and/or design, media research, and engineering. Accomplishments in the fields of new media including digital, database, Internet art responsive/interactive, media performance, or other emerging techno-aesthetic arts will be a plus. Candidates should be highly articulate in the field of audio/visual culture and other relevant fields and disciplines (for example, gender or postcolonial studies). Preference will be given to candidates whose projects and intellectual approach address contemporary social, cultural and ethical issues and do so in analytical, critical and/or transformative ways.
The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses and should be prepared to teach in one of the program’s first year foundation courses. As an active member of our faculty, the candidate will be expected participate in the process of developing and advancing educational initiatives, programs, structures and methodologies in the Visual Arts Program.
This position is a unique opportunity to engage, interact and inspire undergraduate students from a variety of cultures and disciplines, as well as to mentor an exceptional group of graduate students in the visual arts. We are seeking candidates of diverse backgrounds and approaches, who are passionate about community building and who have an interest in collaborative projects crossing to other fields. The appointment can begin as early as fall 2010.

MEDIA ASSISTANT

This position is a full-time appointment during the academic year, August 1 to June 15.
TITLE: Media Assistant
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Candidate will oversee program's Undergrad Computer Lab, SMVisS/Fellows Lab and Sound Studio, the print facilities and the darkroom. The position will manage the equipment stockroom, including checking out of digital video, photo, and audio equipment. The position will help users with department-owned facilities and software, aid in teaching, and assist with the execution of graduate and undergraduate student art projects, and supports the unit in technology advice.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• 25% - Maintain Undergrad Computer Lab, SMVisS/Fellow Lab, and Sound Studio – troubleshoot hardware/ software, recommend purchases, upgrade software, hardware.
• 25% - Aid in teaching through equipment and software demonstrations.
• 20% - Assist with the execution of graduate and undergraduate student art projects on an individual basis by providing technical support in digital video, photo, and audio, and multimedia technologies.
• 20% - Manage equipment inventory, be responsible for equipment sign-in/out to students and faculty. Provide guidance to student workers in equipment stockroom, advisor for electronic and audio/visual acquisitions.
• 5% - Oversee move to and implementation of all Labs in E14/E15 – January 2010
• 5% - Manage A/V needs for VAP classes.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Candidate must be able to work with faculty and staff as part of a team. The position requires autonomy and there is minimal supervision. Must be well organized and a self-starter, also open and available to work with others. Coordinates purchases of equipment and expansion of labs with program director and associate director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Needs ability to work with college-age students in both an advisory and collaborative capacity. Provide guidance for IEL Monitor and Darkroom Monitor. Advise Visual Arts Program Teaching Assistants about documenting class projects and managing class audiovisual equipment.
CONTACTS REQUIRED
• Aid in teaching between 3 and 5 undergraduate and/ or graduate classes per week, working with both faculty and teaching assistant
• Equipment sign-out/in to be determined by department VAP schedule and candidate
• Establish Undergrad open work hours and be available during work time
• Schedule appointments with students for individual help
• Work with VAP Directors and Office Administrators and other Technical Assistant as necessary
• Attend 4x per month and as needed VAP departmental meetings with staff
• Advisor for development of the VAP audiovisual equipment and facilities
• Collaborate with Media Lab Staff when required by interdisciplinary projects
• Coordinate with Media Lab IT to provide IT support for program
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include working knowledge of digital video, photo, audio, web and multimedia software technologies with an emphasis on hardware/ software interactivity. Must have good problem solving skills and a DIY approach to figuring out idiosyncratic tech issues brought up by conceptual art projects. Experience with computer and hardware interfaces required including printers, scanners, and cameras. Knowledge of Mac OS X operating system and networking, printing and media management. Working knowledge of A/V patching and video projection.
Teaching knowledge of digital video operation, digital and film photo camera operation, lighting and sound recording. At least one year of previous experience working with college-age students in a teaching or advisory capacity helpful. Ability to demonstrate software and media equipment to large groups as well as on an individual basis.
